GAY The Musical is a bold new comedy musical that reimagines the life and legacy of John Gay, the Barnstaple born writer best known for The Beggar’s Opera. Told through original songs and playful meta theatre, the show explores what happens when an artist refuses to behave, apologise or be conveniently rewritten by history.

Written and produced by Mrs Animation, the piece blends British farce, Carry On style comedy and modern theatrical storytelling with a knowing wink to opera and scandal.

Mrs Animation, the narrator attempts to keep the story “respectable”, only for Gay himself to burst through the narrative, dragging the audience into a world of rival poets, disastrous romances and political hypocrisy. This production is designed specifically for the Fringe, fast paced, flexible, and joyfully.

While rooted in real history, GAY The Musical is unapologetically modern in tone, using humour and music to question who gets remembered, who gets erased, and why art that makes people laugh is often the most dangerous of all.
