Suited Storytellers bring their distinctive style and sharp suits to a triptych of tales. Traditional, folk and myth. Stories from different places that met and merged. A girl and her horse. An urge to know everything. A goddess.
Blending music, poetry and personal interaction, HERD explores how we find our voice and our people, and what it takes to hold on to our inner wildness.
Finding our herd. Being heard. In our fast-paced, youth-obsessed world these ancient stories remind us what is really important and that, as the years pass, ‘happily ever after’ may not look quite the way we expected.
Suited Storytellers inhabit a world somewhere between storytelling and theatre and, like the tales they tell, that place is both familiar and surprising, comforting and unsettling.
HERD was developed with funding from Arts Council England.
‘Absolutely captivating’
‘Masterfully crafted storytelling’
‘Unexpected and gripping….Fabulous’
‘I love the moments where they step out of the story and then skip back again’,
‘Big fan of Suited Storytellers and the way they interact with us and each other - they make us all part of the experience’
If people coming to a Suited Storytellers’ show expect to see two post-menopausal women telling tales wearing floaty skirts and speaking in hushed tones, they will be bitterly disappointed! Sharp suits, gritty tales with strong female protagonists, quick wit and cheeky irreverence are the hallmarks of Suited Storytellers’ performances.
Our distinctive style blends oral tradition storytelling with poetic interventions, dialogue and carefully crafted staging.
The suits are an important part of what we are about, and not just because of our name. Wearing suits challenges pre-conceptions about storytelling and storytellers, and about us as women - and older women at that. We don’t want to conform to anyone’s expectations, and the suits make it clear we mean business. It is just one of the elements in creating exciting, thought-provoking contemporary storytelling.
Originally from the worlds of theatre and dance, we came together in 2022 to form Suited Storytellers. Between us we have been performing for over 50 years! We have a passion for oral tradition storytelling with its immediacy and connection to its audience, and are committed to keeping these ancient skills alive. But, we are also willing to challenge some of its conventions to bring freshness and vibrancy to the stories we tell.
We can be found - separately and together - telling tales in libraries, theatres, museums, pubs, at festivals and fairs, and whilst walking the dogs!
