Whispers of Woden
Four of Swords

Philip Kingslan John from Devon-based immersive theatre company Four of Swords invites you to join him for a unique experience of Anglo Saxon poetry, ritual and myth, told with wyrd and wonderful illustrations, props and puppets.

Anglo Saxon stories and beliefs form the foundation of English culture. In Devon, just as in so many places, you only need to glance across a map to spot places such as Wembury and Grimspound, named for Woden, King of the Saxon gods, and his alter ego Grimnir.

The problem is that so few of the Anglo Saxon stories were written down. Of those that were, even fewer have survived. Nonetheless some stories do endure. Others can be reconstructed from visual remnants, carvings and images, and comparisons with North and Germanic sources. We have a duty to honour our heritage: our historic English culture. What's more, our Saxon tales are just as strange, absurd, vibrant and darkly stirring to the blood as anything the rest of the world has to offer!
