On Girlhood
Millie Parker

'On Girlhood' is a contemporary dance and physical theatre work created and performed by young women. Described as ‘relatable’, ‘chaotic’ and ‘whimsical’, the work navigates the universal experience of a changing relationship with identity and aims to answer the question – how does your idea of what it means to be a woman change as you grow up?

A work in 5 acts, each featuring a character telling a different story when that question was present, it travels through nostalgia, joy and innocence, eldest daughter energy, indignation, expectations, the external eye, grieving change, harnessing quiet anger and finding sisterhood. With its strong story telling focus, it hopes to encourage audience members to reflect on their own moments when they realised being a woman meant something different to what they thought and open dialogues based in community care and solidarity.

The work is performed by 4 young women and uses a mixture of contemporary dance, physical theatre, dialogue and soundtrack. It draws on a combination of the artists personal stories and memories through life until now, as well as gathered experiences from the communities surrounding her.

Millie Parker is an emerging artist based in Devon, making work rooted in feminism, nostalgia, identity and place.
