Let Me Rest

Let Me Rest is a thoughtful and accomplished contempory dance piece. Two women, dressed identically dance in a piece where movements are broken down, repeated and reshuffled to a shifting soundscape including commands from a spoken voice, roaring electricronica and children singing. The piece is very watchable with strong peformances from both dancers - the relationship between the two women shifts throughout the piece from a competitive, agressive musical-chairs style struggle to separate figures moving in unison and finally compassion as one woman becomes stuck in an exhausting frenzy of repeated movements driven to continue faster and fastser. Great stuff!

In a very different venue - ‘The Factory’, a large warehouse on the outskirts of Barnstaple, Let Me Rest was a dance piece performed by two dancers with choreography by Cathy Richards-exploring the theme of status.  The show lasted about forty five minutes but I can’t tell for sure because during this piece I entered a kind of dreamtime-barely aware of the surroundings.  A spell was woven and it began with a simple contract between the dancers and the audience -so that even those most  inured to the lexicon of dance could relate to the theme and the bodies in space exploring it.  At the centre of the piece was a real/metaphorical game of musical chairs as the dancers strove for one space time and again-the impact moved from the playful to the wryly philosophical, is this how we spend our lives? Let Me Rest was accessible dance - that strove for clarity without ever becoming simplistic.  It was engaging and fun and eventually, when the two dancers stopped competing and found their own spaces, also very moving.

Wonderful – you’re all so talented but sound too loud as so often at the Fringe, almost painful and quite distracting.

I need more time to think about it but it certainly struck emotional cords and am not quite sure why.
