reflections on writing and performing in strange times..."

Does the choice of the material reflect the experience of the last 18 months?

Oh yes. I went back to nursing after an absence of many years. It was quite a shock to the system! Also, because there was no live stuff, my diary became emptier than Richard Branson's soul, so I started writing lots of poems based on my experiences of healthcare over the last 28 years. It was picked up by Burning Eye (a performance poetry publisher) and released earlier this year. So hey presto! I have a new book of poems, lots of which are now firmly established in the live set.

What has the rehearsal/filming process been like?

No different to the usual: I spend prolonged periods wandering around my local park, gesticulating and mumbling, blending in quite well with several neighbours. Filming it's the easy bit - 'One-take Gee', they call me. No, really.

Have there been any unexpected good things about creating work in these strange times or has it only made things difficult?

It's meant less distractions, and it did me good to be at the sharp end of things on the nursing front. It meant the stuff I wrote was very different to anything I thought I'd be writing this year. I left nursing again just over a month ago and I'm still processing everything. The best of it was the colleagues I met and the people I nursed. I don't look good in a nursing tunic though - I look like I've nicked it, basically.
