Facts and Fancies: Tales from the West Country
The Plough Storytelling Circle

We want to tell you a story!

In a mad world where everything demands our immediate attention and images bombard our eyes, take a little time out to rest your mind and listen to a story.

Since humans learned language they have told each other stories - to try to make sense of the world, to pass on knowledge and simply to entertain. And it seems there is just as much need for the ancient art of oral storytelling in this digital age as there ever was.

Who are we?

Local people who somehow stumbled across storytelling. Maybe we heard a storyteller at a festival. Perhaps we were dragged along by a friend. But we were all captivated. Drawn in by the teller. Seduced by the story. And we all thought, ‘I wonder if I could do that?’

And so we formed the Plough Storytelling Circle with the help of the Plough Arts Centre in Great Torrington, and spoke our first tentative words. And now here we are! And we would love you to lend us your ears.

What we will give you....

Five stories told by five different tellers with their own different styles, linked together by the words and song of our mentor, Teri West.

Stories of the sea and of ships, of giants and highwaymen. Stories that have travelled through the mists of time and from not so long ago. Stories of fact and fancy. And all from the West Country.

So come and take the weight of your feet. And your shoulders. And your mind. And lose yourself in stories. Just for a little while.
